Creating a Respectful, Safe, and Learner-Focused Environment
Payette School District’s dress expectations are designed to support a positive educational environment that promotes learning, safety, professionalism, and respect for all learners and staff. Clothing and appearance can contribute to a productive school climate and help minimize distractions to the educational process.
Dress and appearance remain primarily the responsibility of learners and families. However, all learners are expected to follow district dress expectations while on school grounds and at school-sponsored activities.
Appropriate Attire
Clothing should support learning.
Footwear Required
Shoes are required at all times.
School Environment
Clothing should minimize disruption.
Respectful Expectations
Dress should reflect respect for self and others.
Purpose of the Dress Code
Payette School District recognizes that learner appearance can impact the educational environment. Dress expectations are intended to:
- Support a safe and respectful school climate
- Minimize disruptions to learning
- Promote professionalism and responsibility
- Maintain an environment conducive to education
The district also recognizes the importance of family partnership and individual expression while balancing the needs of the school environment.
General Expectations
Learners are expected to wear clothing that:
- Is appropriate for the educational setting
- Promotes a positive learning environment
- Does not create substantial disruption
- Meets health and safety expectations
- Respects others within the school community

Clothing & Appearance Expectations
Pants, Shorts, Skirts & Dresses
Learners may wear:
- Jeans
- Khakis
- Athletic shorts
- Dresses
- Skirts
Length Expectations
- Shorts, skirts, and dresses should be no higher than six inches above the center of the knee
OR - Must extend beyond fingertips while standing naturally
Not Permitted
- Pajamas
- Boxers as outerwear
- Sweats during the regular school day
Clothing & Appearance Expectations
Shirts & Tops
Learners may wear:
- Tops with sleeves
- Shoulders, back, and cleavage covered
- Shirts that meet the top of pants while standing
- Necklines that are school appropriate (neckline does not plunge below the imaginary line from armpit to armpit)
Not Permitted
- Bare midriffs
- Backless tops
- See-through clothing
- Extremely low-cut clothing

Clothing & Appearance Expectations
Footwear
Shoes are to be worn at all times.
Acceptable footwear may include:
- Tennis shoes
- Casual shoes
- Dress shoes
- Boots
- Sandals
- Flip flops
Not Permitted
- Slippers
- Wheeled shoes
Clothing & Appearance Expectations
Athletic & Activity Clothing
Athletic attire such as:
- yoga pants
- sweats
- PE clothing
is limited to physical education classes or approved activity settings.

Additional Expectations
The following are not permitted at school or school-sponsored activities:
- Clothing or accessories promoting drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or illegal activity
- Clothing depicting violence, gang affiliation, or offensive material
- Sexually explicit or lewd content
- Gang-related symbols or attire
- Apparel creating substantial disruption
Hoods and blankets are not to be worn during the instructional day.
Head Coverings
Head coverings are generally not permitted inside the school building during regular school hours unless:
- Approved for religious purposes
- Approved for medical purposes
- Approved for specific school activities or events
- Authorized by administration
District policy recognizes accommodations for cultural, religious, and ethnic differences.
Dress Code Support & Enforcement
Staff and administrators work to address dress concerns respectfully and consistently while maintaining a positive school environment.
When concerns arise:
- Learners may be asked to adjust clothing
- Families may be contacted
- Alternative clothing arrangements may be needed
- Repeated or significant violations may result in disciplinary action consistent with district policy and the student handbook
Accommodations & Individual Needs
Payette School District seeks to accommodate:
- Cultural differences
- Religious practices
- Ethnic traditions
- Medical needs
provided such accommodations do not substantially disrupt the educational environment or create safety concerns.
The district also recognizes and protects natural hair and facial hair practices consistent with Board Policy 3255.
